RA Application Process

The following information details the process to apply for as new Resident Assistant for the 2018-2019 academic year. Please review this information carefully. If you have any questions, please contact Faith Brehm by calling 319-385-6426 or email faith.brehm@iw.edu

Step 1

Update your resume and cover letter. We encourage all applicants to make an appointment with Katherine Evans, Director of Career Development, to develop or review your resume and cover letter PRIOR to applying. Applicants will be required to upload their resume and cover letter to the online application.

Your cover letter should answer the following questions:

  • What experiences have you had at Iowa Wesleyan University that have influenced your decision to apply to be a resident assistant?
  • What do you hope to gain as a resident assistant?

Step 2

Attend an info night. Info Nights are a great way for candidates to ask questions directly to a staff member as well as current RAs. All candidates are required to attend ONE of three Info Nights. If a candidate cannot make a scheduled info night date, they must contact Faith Brehm to make other arrangements.

Info Nights will be held at the following dates, times and locations:

  • Sunday, January 28, 2018 6:00PM in the McCurdy Room of the Howe Student Activity Center
  • Sunday, January 29, 2018 7:00 PM in the McCurdy Room of the Howe Student Activity Center
  • Wednesday, February 7, 2018 7:00PM in the Espy/McCurdy Room of the Howe Student Activity Center
  • Thursday, February 15 at 6PM in the Espy-McCurdy Room

Step 3

Application opens on Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Students are required to use their IW email address to complete the application. As part of the application, candidates will be asked to select their availability for both a personal and group interview. Applications are due Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:59 PM.

Step 4

Reference Form

 

All candidates are required to have two reference forms filled out on their behalf. One form must be from a resident assistant (preferably their own). References are due Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:59 PM.

Step 5

Schedule an Interview*. Applicants will be asked to schedule both a personal interview and a group interview. The personal interview will be between the candidate and 1 or 2 Student Development staff members. The group interview will have a group of candidates go through a series of activities while being evaluated by a team of residential life staff.

*Interviews will be scheduled for candidates who pass a grade and conduct check.

The following timeline is intended to be a guide for the RA Selection process and to provide a glimpse into the academic year. All dates and times are subject to change.

Spring 2018

  • January 28, 2018 6:00 PM—Info Night #1 McCurdy Room
  • January 29, 2018 7:00 PM—Info Night #2 McCurdy Room
  • January 30, 2018—Application Opens
  • February 7, 2018 7:00 PM—Info Night #3 Espy/McCurdy Room
  • Thursday, February 15 at 6PM in the Espy-McCurdy Room
  • February 22. 2018—Applications Due at 11:59 PM
  • February 26-March 2—Personal Interviews
  • March 23—Group Interview
  • March 30—Selection process ends
  • April TBD—RA Orientation

Fall 2018

  • August 6-16—RA Training*
  • August 16—Move In Day & Start of New Student Orientation
