Choral Ensembles

The IW Concert Choir consists of approximately 40 singers and performs frequently each semester. In addition to concert performances, the ensemble sings for multiple special ceremonies on campus and at least twice each semester for worship services at local churches. The Concert Choir takes a domestic tour each academic year and has traveled to Europe twice in the past decade.

Primae Voces is a vocal ensemble of 10-12 singers specializing in the performance of chamber, classical and popular music, as well as vocal jazz. The group performs regularly in concerts and for special events on and off campus.

The Mount Pleasant Chorale consists of students and adult community members. The ensemble performs at least once each semester. The bachelor’s degree in music contains concert programs which often include choral-orchestral masterworks.

Instrumental Ensembles

The Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra is a regional professional symphony orchestra of about 50 musicians, including Iowa Wesleyan students, faculty members and community members. The ensemble performs classical orchestral literature offering three subscription series concerts yearly (each performed in Mount Pleasant, Burlington and Ottumwa, Iowa) and several educational and entertainment programs including the Fourth of July “Symphony Blast,” pops concerts, Young Artist competition, school tours and concerts featuring nationally-known musical artists.

The Southeast Iowa Band, is a semi-professional community band of about 50 students, faculty and community members. The group performs a formal concert each semester of classic band literature. This group is supported financially through donations from concert patrons and Iowa Wesleyan University.

IW Chamber Band

This ensemble, open to wind and percussion players from all areas of study, focuses on the performance of traditional and contemporary band literature. ­The ensemble gives one formal performance each semester and often performs for events on campus. This group also serves as the core ensemble for the athletic pep band, performing occasionally for football, volleyball and basketball games. The Chamber Band is under the direction of Dr. Michael Knight.

The Jazz Ensemble is open to all IW students who play a traditional jazz ensemble instrument (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, drums). ­This ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of jazz literature from all styles and eras. ­Jazz Ensemble members also participate as part of the pep band. The Jazz Ensemble is directed by Dr. Michael Knight.
