President Spaulding served Iowa Wesleyan from 1876 to 1884. After Dr. Wheeler’s presidency, the trustees elected Rev. Wesley J. Spaulding D.D., who had a long association with the University in a variety of roles. He was a scholarly person with a fine analytical mind and his annual reports were lucid, vigorous statements of the issues and problems, noting the inability of the University to draw students from a wide area. The major achievement of the Spaulding administration was the affiliation of the Conservatory of Music under Alexander Rommel. His many proposals for fundraising had not received concrete action and he resigned in 1884.
