Iowa Wesleyan University is accepting applications for an Adjunct Instructor for Life, Language and Culture.  Adjunct Instructors are contracted on a semester to semester basis and instruction of courses may take place either face to face or online during the evenings, weekends and summer months dependent upon the course offerings during that particular semester.

An Adjunct Instructor for Life, Language and Culture is responsible for delivering a rich curriculum that provides students with an introduction to foreign language communications skills and the cross-cultural awareness they need to engage natives of the culture effectively or to perform other language-related tasks. Language and Culture Instructors will apply sound instructional methodologies to meet student needs and conduct language proficiency testing in reading, speaking and understanding for skills evaluation. Instruction in the culture will include current affairs as well as significant historical events shaping that culture.

An adjunct instructor must possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes of management and leadership, organizational strengths, strong interpersonal and communication skills.  Successful candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellent undergraduate instruction. Participation in assessment of student learning is also required.

The required qualifications for the position as an Online Adjunct Instructor for Life, Language and Culture are

  • Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in one of the following fields or related studies:
    • Education
    • Foreign Languages
    • Linguistics
  • Native language speaker
  • Native-like fluency in one of the languages listed above, as well as advanced English proficiency (applicants will be required to take proficiency tests in their claimed language)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the respective area’s history, culture, politics and economy.
  • Ability to use the latest technology and teaching techniques.

Advanced proficiency in at least one of the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Russian.
  • Spanish
  • Thai

Desired qualifications for the position as an Online Adjunct Instructor for Life. Language and Culture are

  • Experience teaching language skills to college learners
  • Experience living, working and/or studying abroad.
