“IW prepared me to work as a bedside nurse with all of the clinical hours that we had to do. It seemed like a lot at the time but looking back, it was well worth it!” Caitlin’s Favorite Memory of Iowa Wesleyan: “Meeting all my friends through my nursing classes, living in the dorms and playing on the softball and soccer teams.”
The music program at Iowa Wesleyan has provided me with so many opportunities. Some of these include pursuing and deepening my passion for performing, and also strengthening my ability as a leader. It has given me a newfound respect for my field and myself, and has led me to friendships that will last for the rest of my life.
“The classes I took at IW helped prepare me for my career. I never wanted to stop learning and I wanted to find ways to develop myself as a professional. That led to many different opportunities that I took advantage of.” Matt’s Favorite Memory of Iowa Wesleyan: “Meeting my wife on campus my senior year, and in the same year I was offered a position here at IW in Student Development.”
I chose the Exercise Science major because of my passion for organized sports, the human body, health and wellness, and to prepare for graduate study. I have a strong interest in how the body responds and adapts to exercise. The Exercise Science major provides great preparation for my career goal of attaining a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Having a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science also allows me to get certified at the highest level of personal training.
“IW was my first experience into the American culture, both academically and socially. Having to learn English in a small campus environment helped me build my language skills fast. The communication skills I learned at IW helped me get through graduate school and ultimately find a career in international banking.” Yenny’s Favorite Memory of Iowa Wesleyan: “My favorite IW memory is the small campus environment where I could build personal connections with my fellow students and professors. Coming from another country, IW gave me a sense of community in a big country like USA. Now that I live in Los Angeles, I could see the warm hospitality that IW offers to international students.”
“I was very pleased with the level of experience the faculty at IW had. In my mind, if an education program is going to have success it needs to have experience, like the one at IW. I am more prepared for my current teaching career because of the courses and faculty and staff.”
“Being at IW not only allowed me to get my education within the community where I lived, but also afforded me amazing mentors for my graduate program. My internship at Chadwick Library allowed me to learn several skills that would be crucial to have while earning my MSLS. The former director of the library, Paula Kinney, kept in touch with me and encouraged me to apply for a position at the library upon graduation. This support and encouragement were crucial in getting my first job as an academic librarian, and continued support within IW has helped me earn my way to becoming the current director of the library.” Paula’s Favorite Memory of Iowa Wesleyan: “My favorite memory of IW was the friends I made. I was a non-traditional student with a husband and daughter, but made friends with other students of varying ages, from all across the country. This diversity of students gave me the opportunity to learn more about people from outside the Mount Pleasant community, and made my time here even more enriching and rewarding.”
“It’s safe to say that I underestimated the power of reading to change a student’s academic outcome until I took Primary Literacy. It was in Primary Lit that I developed a passion for reading and acquired the belief that all students can learn to read . Through that class and others like Remedial and Diagnostic Reading, I had the knowledge and skills to help me successfully complete my Reading Practicum and make it a positive growing experience. My goal is to obtain a position as a reading specialist or as an educator in a general education classroom. I feel confident that I can provide quality reading instruction in both of those positions.”
